Topology & The Impossible 3D Knots | From Reidemeister Moves to 4D Fiber Bundles

BEHIND THE WORK

Imagine a universe where distance, angles, and area do not exist. In topology, shapes can stretch, bend, and twist freely. But there is one unbreakable rule: you can never cut, and you can never glue. What happens when a single closed line is tangled in three-dimensional space?

In this 6.5-minute mathematical documentary, Artismathic uncovers the profound world of knot theory, Brunnian links, and four-dimensional fiber bundles across four masterworks:

1. The Prime Knot Invariants: Trefoil and Figure-Eight Knots — The simplest non-trivial knot 3_1 and the unique 4-crossing knot 4_1. Exploring Reidemeister moves, knot invariants, and why the figure-eight knot can deform into its own mirror image while the trefoil is chiral. 2. The Quantum Entanglement Link: Borromean Rings — A Brunnian link of three closed rings where no two individual rings are linked, yet together they are inseparable. Severing any single ring instantly frees the other two, predicting quantum Efimov states in molecular physics. 3. The 5-Fold Star Torus Braiding: Cinquefoil Knot — Torus knot T(5,2), the five-crossing star knot woven from 21 braided ribbons. Demonstrating Seifert surfaces, torus winding numbers, and unbroken periodic closure. 4. The 4D Sphere Fibration: Hopf Fibration — Heinz Hopf's 1931 landmark mapping of the 4D hypersphere S^3 onto the 2-sphere S^2. Every fiber is a great circle; any two fibers are linked exactly once as Villarceau circles on nested tori, dictating electron 720-degree spin and Dirac monopoles.

Formula: Figure-Eight Knot (4_1): r(t) = ((2 + cos(2t)) cos(3t), (2 + cos(2t)) sin(3t), sin(4t)), t in [0, 2pi] Borromean Rings (6_3^2): R_k(t) = rotated ellipses in orthogonal planes with alternating overpass braid Cinquefoil Torus Knot T(5,2): r(t) = ((R + r cos(5t)) cos(2t), (R + r cos(5t)) sin(2t), r sin(5t)), t in [0, 2pi] Hopf Fibration S^3 to S^2: h(z0, z1) = (2 Re(z0 z1*), 2 Im(z0 z1*), |z0|^2 - |z1|^2), fibers = linked Villarceau circles
