Can a Rolling Circle Weave This?

BEHIND THE WORK

Can a rolling circle weave this?

A small circle rolls around the outside of a larger one while an attached point traces the path. One input t controls the motion through x(t) = 7.5 cos(t) − 3.5 cos(15t/4) and y(t) = 7.5 sin(t) − 3.5 sin(15t/4). From 0 to 8π, the rolling ratio closes eleven crossing loops into one continuous orbital lace.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

x(t)=7.5cos(t)−3.5cos(15t/4)x(t) = 7.5 cos(t) − 3.5 cos(15t/4)y(t)=7.5sin(t)−3.5sin(15t/4)y(t) = 7.5 sin(t) − 3.5 sin(15t/4)0≤t≤8π0 ≤ t ≤ 8π
