Can a Sphere and Cylinder Draw This?

BEHIND THE WORK

Can a sphere and cylinder draw this?

The Viviani curve is the path shared by the sphere x² + y² + z² = 4 and the cylinder (x − 1)² + y² = 1. One moving point follows x(t) = 1 + cos(t), y(t) = sin(t), and z(t) = 2 sin(t/2). As t travels from 0 to 4π, the point traces both spatial loops and returns to their crossing.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

x(t)=1+cos(t)x(t) = 1 + cos(t)y(t)=sin(t)y(t) = sin(t)z(t)=2sin(t/2)z(t) = 2 sin(t/2)0≤t≤4π0 ≤ t ≤ 4π
