Can 17 and 23 Weave a Vortex?

BEHIND THE WORK

Can 17 and 23 weave a vortex?

One point follows the complete parametric system a(t) = 4 + 2.8 cos(17t/3), x(t) = a(t) cos(t) + 0.8 cos(23t), and y(t) = a(t) sin(t) + 0.8 sin(23t), for 0 ≤ t ≤ 6π. The 17/3 radial wave repeatedly pulls the main orbit inward and pushes it outward, while the faster 23-frequency circle stitches smaller loops through every lobe. The mismatched rhythms close after three full revolutions, producing one continuous guilloche vortex.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

a(t)=4+2.8cos(17t/3)a(t) = 4 + 2.8 cos(17t/3)x(t)=a(t)cos(t)+0.8cos(23t)x(t) = a(t) cos(t) + 0.8 cos(23t)y(t)=a(t)sin(t)+0.8sin(23t)y(t) = a(t) sin(t) + 0.8 sin(23t)0≤t≤6π0 ≤ t ≤ 6π
