One Unwinding String Becomes Two Gears
BEHIND THE WORK
Can an unwinding string build two gears?
Pull a taut string away from a base circle and its tip traces an involute. That same curve forms the flanks of real involute gear teeth. One moving point repeats the construction around 17-tooth and 11-tooth base circles, joining both outlines into one continuous mathematical drawing.
Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.
