The Shape With Infinite Length But Zero Area

BEHIND THE WORK

Can a shape have a finite area, but an infinite boundary? Can a one-dimensional line pack so tightly that it fills every single point of a two-dimensional square?

For centuries, Euclidean geometry taught us that nature is made of smooth lines and perfect circles. But nature is not smooth. Nature is fractal.

In this mathematical documentary, we explore four of history's most extraordinary fractals: the paper-folding paradox of the Heighway Dragon Curve, David Hilbert's 1891 space-filling curve that swallows two-dimensional space, the Pythagoras Tree that blooms into an organic geometric forest, and the 500-million-year-old logarithmic spiral of the Golden Nautilus.

Formula: Heighway Dragon: z_{n+1} = (1 + i) z_n / 2, dim_H ≈ 1.5236 Hilbert Space-Filling: f: [0, 1] → [0, 1]², continuous, surjective, dim_H = 2 Pythagoras Tree: a² + b² = c², 511 recursive squares across 9 generations Logarithmic Spiral: r(θ) = a e^{b θ}, constant growth angle α = cot⁻¹(b)

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

zn+1=(1+i)zn/2,a2+b2=c2,r=aebhetaz_{n+1} = (1+i)z_n/2, a^2 + b^2 = c^2, r = a e^{b heta}
