How Pure Math Built a 500-Million-Year-Old Shell

BEHIND THE WORK

500 million years ago, before dinosaurs walked the Earth, the Nautilus evolved a shell governed by a single mathematical equation: the logarithmic spiral r(theta) = r0 * exp(k * theta). As it grows, each new chamber maintains constant buoyancy against the crushing deep sea. One continuous luminous point draws the shell, weaves through all 34 hydraulic chambers, and coils into the ancient golden heart.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.
